Tips for Receiving Massage

Updated: Mar 9, 2024

Before you arrive

  • Exercise! It warms your muscles up and increases circulation. This makes them more receptive to releasing during the massage. Stretching, moderate exercise, or even just a brisk 10 minute walk before your session is helpful.

  • Hydrate! This helps your body process and release metabolic waste stored in your muscles. As well it keeps your muscles pliable so they release faster and helps expedite recovery if you get a "massage hangover", or have soreness after a particularly deep session.

  • Think of what issues you would like to address or what kind of results you're seeking. Don’t worry if you can’t think of everything beforehand, or if you can't think of anything at all. We can figure it out during the session.

  • If you have recently been ill, please wait at least two days after your symptoms have subsided to come in for your massage. The increase in blood circulation that massage provides can exacerbate your symptoms.

  • If you are experiencing hives, anaphylaxis, or any similar kind of allergic reaction, please reschedule your bodywork session. The increase in blood circulation that massage provides can make your symptoms worse.

After arriving for your session

  • Silence or turn off your cell phone. Even when set on vibrate cell phone noises are distracting for both the therapist and client. Though if you need to stay alert for an important phone call or text, that is completely understandable and we can keep your phone within your immediate reach.

  • Make sure to use the bathroom before your intake. Sometimes I can compensate for the missed time used to go to the bathroom during a session, other times my schedule may not allow for that.

  • Remove all jewelry- especially necklaces and earrings. There is a table in the room where you can place your jewelry, wallet, cell phone, and other incidentals.

  • Remove your glasses

  • Pull your hair back into a clip or hair tie- I have these available to use if you need one.

  • Ask questions! This is your massage session and I would like for you to be as comfortable as possible.

After your session

  • Leave slowly. You may want to anticipate spending an extra 5-10 minutes in the lobby to ensure that you are fully awake and ready to leave. It’s not uncommon to be groggy after your massage. Not rushing out allows your results to settle in as well as ensures that you are being safe to leave and possibly drive.

  • Hydrate more! As mentioned earlier, this encourages recovery.

  • When you get the chance to: gently stretch. Especially focus on areas we worked on during the session. If you’re not sure how to stretch, I may be able to show you some stretches, or point you towards information such as an online article or video.

  • If you are aware of any rehabilitative movements you can do to help with a chronic issue, it's ideal to do them shortly after a massage session.

  • I hope you have time to relax after you leave! It makes a great difference in letting your massage results settle in.
